We talk about enamel corrosion. And how it looks like. But did you know how important enamel really is? And why you have to protect it? Here are some things you probably didn’t know about enamel.
1. The STRONGEST material in your body
The enamel on your teeth is the hardest and most highly mineralized substance in your body.

Yep. You heard that right. In fact, this apatite group of minerals scores a five on the Mohs hardness scale, making it even harder than some materials like steel!

This enamel is incredibly important. It’s the semi-translucent outer layer of every single tooth, and its colour can range from yellow to white. It is the very first thing people see when you show off your pearly white smile.

But the enamel serves more than just cosmetic purposes.
2. The enamel also prevents other problems like decay!
More importantly than looks, it helps protect your teeth from decay, and forms a strong barrier that protects the inner layers of your teeth from acids and plaque;
3. Enamel also protects your teeth from very hot or cold foods.
This wonderful substance is also the first line of defence that protects your teeth from foods and beverages that are very hot or very cold.

Pretty cool right? Can you imagine life without your enamel? Eating ice cream would be literally the WORST experience ever.
4. Enamel cannot rebuild itself.
However, unfortunately for you if your enamel is destroyed, your body does not make more to replace it. Enamel does not contain any living cells, unlike bones, so it cannot regenerate.
Start protecting your enamel
So your enamel is clearly very important, so how do you go about protecting it?

You can protect your enamel by avoiding foods that are known to cause a lot of damage. Sugary foods and acidic fruits and beverages are among the most damaging to your tooth enamel. When those substances stick to your teeth and interact with bacteria in your mouth, lactic acid is produced, which damages your enamel.

Avoid eating too much of these foods when you can, and if you do consume them,
- don’t brush your teeth immediately after consuming acidic food / drinks.Â
- instead, rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic food/drinks, then brush your teeth afterwards to prevent enamel erosion

Hard foods like ice cubes or hard candy could also crack or chip your enamel!

So if you do indulge in hard candy, suck on it – don’t bite down on it.

 Be wary of certain home teeth whitening remedies that could erode your enamel. Avoid solutions with ingredients like apple cider vinegar and your enamel will thank you for it.
