Nobody likes yellow teeth. If you want clean white teeth, you should scrub your teeth with a toothbrush that has hard bristles to make sure you get all the stains out, right?
Wrong!
Harder bristles do not mean deeper cleaning. You might actually be damaging your teeth and gums by doing so.
Soft bristles are much gentler on your teeth and gums while effectively removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth.
What’s wrong with using hard bristles?
It sounds counterintuitive to use soft bristles because you want to clean your teeth thoroughly.
You would use a steel wool scrubber instead of a foam sponge to scrub the food debris out of your pots and pans. So why shouldn’t you use a toothbrush with harder bristles to give your teeth a deep cleaning?
You should think of your teeth as something closer to a non-stick pan.
You would not use a steel wool scrubber on a non-stick pan because it can damage the non-stick layer. Similarly, scrubbing your teeth with hard bristles will wear away the protective enamel on your teeth.
Hard bristles are not meant for everyday use. Studies show that intensive brushing by brushing too often, brushing with too much force and brushing with hard bristles can damage your enamel layer.
What makes things worse is that most people brush too hard, thinking that it cleans more, worsening the impact that hard bristles have on your teeth.
You’re probably making things worse by brushing too hard
Scrub Harder = More Clean, makes sense right?
Wrong. In fact, your teeth are equally as clean if you brush with less force and that’s why using soft bristles is effective.
The key is time.
It’s actually more important that you spend enough time brushing different parts of your teeth for the total recommended time of 2 minutes.
You also need to use a consistent amount of force in all areas of your teeth. You might not realise it, but this is how most of us brush:
- We start off brushing fervently at the front of our teeth.
- As time goes on, our arms get tired,
- We use less force, and
- We stop trying to reach into all the corners as we think about rinsing our mouth out so we can go to sleep.
If the thought of brushing with soft bristles and with less force bothers you, it’s time to switch things up with an electric toothbrush.
Electric toothbrushes provide the cleaning power you need
Electric toothbrushes can vibrate at high speeds with thousands of micro movements so you’re essentially getting a deeper clean with wayyy less effort on your part.
They’re also designed to get into the hard-to-reach spaces in your teeth to remove plaque and bacteria that are hiding there.
The key is to not apply too much pressure to your teeth with the electric toothbrush.
Gently hold the electric toothbrush to your teeth and let it do all the hard, manual work for you!
Some even have timers that beep at 30 second intervals so you know to brush for that amount of time for each quarter of your mouth.
This way, you know your teeth are getting the deep cleaning they need without harming your enamel layer or your gums.
